Threads or powder — which should I choose?

Both are the same ISO Grade 1 saffron; it's about how you cook. Threads are best when you have a few minutes to bloom them in warm milk or water and let the colour and aroma develop — ideal for kesar doodh, kheer, biryani and ritual use. Powder is finely milled for faster colour and easier dosing, perfect for sweets, halwa and recipes where soaking isn't practical. No soaking required.

How much saffron should I use?

Accepted Answer

For cooking, a pinch — roughly 5 to 10 threads, about 30mg — per serving is plenty. For a daily wellness ritual, around 30mg a day is the amount traditionally used. A little goes a long way; please don't exceed 1.5g of saffron in a day.

How do I prepare saffron for the best colour and aroma?

Bloom it first. Soak your threads in 2 tablespoons of warm — not boiling — milk or water for 10 to 20 minutes, then stir the bloomed liquid into your dish near the end of cooking. Adding dry saffron straight to a hot pan wastes most of it. Our powder doesn't need soaking — add a small pinch directly to warm milk, tea or batter.

Milk or water — which is better for soaking?

Warm milk for desserts like kheer, payasam and lassi; warm water for savoury dishes like biryani and pulao. The fat in milk draws out more of the aroma, while water draws out more of the colour.

How do I make kesar doodh (saffron milk)?

Crush 5 to 10 threads (or stir in a pinch of our powder) into a glass of warm milk. Add a pinch of cardamom and a teaspoon of honey if you like. It's a comforting ritual — many enjoy it warm before bed, or in the morning.

How should I store saffron to keep it fresh?

Keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator at around 0–4°C, away from light and moisture. Let it come back to room temperature before you open the container, so condensation doesn't form on the threads. Stored this way, saffron keeps its colour and aroma for two to three years.

Does heat destroy saffron?

High, direct heat damages saffron's delicate aroma compounds. That's why we bloom it gently in warm liquid and add it towards the end of cooking, rather than frying it dry. Treated kindly, the colour and aroma carry beautifully through a dish.

A pinch of bloomed saffron stirred into a face-mask base — yoghurt, honey or sandalwood — is a centuries-old practice in Indian homes. If you'd like to try it, do a small patch test on your skin first.

What does ISO 3632 Grade 1 actually mean?

ISO 3632 is the international standard that grades saffron in a lab across three measurable qualities: colouring strength (crocin), flavour (picrocrocin) and aroma (safranal). Grade 1 — the top tier — requires the highest scores on all three, including a colouring strength of 200+. Every Baby Saffron lot is tested and released only after it clears Grade 1 limits.

How can I tell real saffron from fake?

Accepted Answer

Saffron is the world's most adulterated spice, so it's worth knowing the signs. Drop a few threads into room-temperature water: real saffron releases its colour slowly, golden tendrils deepening to amber over 10 to 15 minutes, while the threads themselves stay red. Fake or dyed saffron bleeds red almost instantly and the threads fall apart. Real threads are trumpet-shaped, deep red with a tiny serrated tip — not uniform little sticks. They smell of honey and hay with a faintly bitter note, and taste honey-sweet to the nose but slightly bitter on the tongue. Sharp, sugary-sweet perfume usually means it's been treated.

Is your saffron lab-tested and certified?

Yes. Every batch we pack is lab-tested for ISO 3632 Grade 1 in our own government-accredited (NABL) saffron lab. The certificate ships with every order, and the colouring strength of your batch is printed on the back of the tin. We grade by hand and pack against moisture with a tamper-evident seal.

Why is real saffron so expensive?

Because there is no shortcut. Every gram of saffron is the hand-picked, hand-separated stigma of about 150 crocus flowers. Each flower yields only three stigmas, and the harvest window is just two weeks a year. There is no machine-harvested saffron — genuine, high-grade kesar costs what it costs.

Is a label that says “premium” enough?

Not on its own. “Premium” means little without a grade and a number — the one that matters most is colouring strength, and anything below 190 is not Grade 1. Ask for the ISO 3632 grade. Ours measures 200+, which means a smaller pinch goes further.

You can raise a return within 48 hours of delivery — with photos of the product and packaging — if the pack arrived damaged or tampered with, you received the wrong product, or it's past its best-before date. For food-safety reasons, opened or used products and opened gift packs can't be returned. Approved refunds are processed within 5 to 7 working days to your original payment method.
